Origin of Kokeshi
Kokeshi are traditional wooden crafts that originated in the Tohoku region of Japan (particularly in Miyagi, Fukushima, and Yamagata prefectures) during the late Edo period.
Originally, they were made as souvenirs from hot spring resorts and were cherished as children's toys.

Characteristics of Kokeshi
Simple Shape: Made with a round head and cylindrical body, with no arms or legs.
Beautiful Hand-Painted Designs: Decorated with floral or geometric patterns that vary by region.
Warmth of Natural Wood: Crafted from Mizuki (dogwood), Itaya maple, or Zelkova wood.
One-of-a-Kind Artistry: Each piece is handcrafted, making no two dolls exactly alike.
Types of Kokeshi
Kokeshi are broadly classified into "Traditional Kokeshi" and "Creative Kokeshi."

Traditional Kokeshi (Region-Specific Characteristics)
Tsuchiyu Style (Fukushima Prefecture): Slender body, some with spring-connected heads.
Naruko Style (Miyagi Prefecture): Makes a "kiku-kiku" sound when the head is turned.
Tsugaru Style (Aomori Prefecture): Features a thicker body with bold patterns.
Hijiori Style (Yamagata Prefecture): Recognizable by its bob-cut hairstyle and simple face.
Creative Kokeshi (Modern Artistic Designs)
Incorporates traditional techniques while allowing for artistic freedom.
Features various motifs, including human figures and animals, making them popular as home decor.
