Description from the seller
Oil on canvas by Émile Bastien-Lepage (1854–1938)
The Willows
Dimensions: 30 × 22 cm (excluding frame)
Model: Lucie, cousin of the Bastien-Lepage family.
Oil on canvas marouflé on wooden panel
A rare and profoundly intimate work, at the very heart of the Bastien-Lepage family universe.
This painting depicts young Lucie, who is also immortalized in the famous painting 'La Communiante' by Jules Bastien-Lepage.
His gentle profile, the delicate light on the white dress, and the silent atmosphere of the garden create a scene of remarkable poetry.
Locality 'Les Saules', municipality of Damvilliers.
Painting that belonged to the grandmother of the former owner of the painting residing in Damvilliers.
Why is this work exceptional?
Direct connection with the Bastien-Lepage family: rare testimony of a private scene.
Authenticated location: 'Les Saules,' in Damvillers (Meuse), the place where Jules and Émile carried out much of their naturalist studies.
Identified model: the young woman depicted is cousin Lucie, recognizable by comparison with 'La Communiante' and especially by the signature 'to my very dear Luc,' the only possible conclusion being that she is Lucie, their cousin.
A typically naturalist aesthetic: soft palette, deep greens of the undergrowth, subtle modeling of the flesh.
A collectible painting, rarely seen on the market.
Description
The young woman is sitting in profile, calm and elegant, in a leafy garden.
The light plays on the folds of the dress, and the green background, worked with small touches.
Overlaid, it recalls the entire naturalist tradition of the Bastien-Lepage family.
A hat placed in the grass completes this outdoor scene.
Date: 1886
Ideal work for collector.
An elegant, intimate, rare, and historically significant painting.
