This is an original Japanese woodblock print by Tsukioka Kōgyo, titled 'Shunei' (春栄) from the acclaimed Nōgaku Zue (Illustrations of Noh Plays) series.
Published during the Meiji period by Matsuki Heikichi, this work dates to the late 19th century.
The scene is based on the Noh play Shunei, a poignant tale of brotherly love and sacrifice. It depicts the story of Shuneimaru, a young boy taken captive, and his elder brother Masuo Tanenao, who comes to rescue him.
In an emotional moment, Shuneimaru pretends to be a servant to protect his brother from punishment.
Eventually, moved by his brother’s selfless devotion, Shuneimaru reveals his true identity, and just as both are prepared to face death, a last-minute pardon arrives.
The print masterfully captures this dramatic and emotional climax with striking visual contrasts, such as the vibrant robes of Shuneimaru and the stern posture of the warrior brother.

Artist Profile:
Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869–1927) was a celebrated Japanese printmaker and painter best known for his detailed and expressive depictions of Noh theatre.
Trained under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and later Ogata Gekkō, Kōgyo brought theatrical performance to life through his prolific woodblock print series, such as Nōgaku Zue and Nōga Taikan.
His works are prized for their delicate linework, accurate costuming, and atmospheric presentation of Japan’s classical performance arts.
He played a significant role in preserving and popularizing Noh through visual art during the Meiji and Taishō periods.
