Il pezzo è stato realizzato da Kevin Bottomley & Baird (KB&B) Ltd. Prodotto a Glasgow o a Londra, in Inghilterra.

Il dispositivo è stato originariamente chiamato specchio azimutale da Lord Kelvin quando ha inventato il dispositivo e inizialmente è stato utilizzato uno specchio. Quando l'invenzione fu perfezionata, lo specchio fu sostituito da un prisma di vetro. Lo strumento è stato concepito per essere collocato in cima a una bussola correttamente realizzata, per consentire di prendere indicazioni più precise dalla testa della bussola.
