This signed oil painting on canvas by Cornelis Raaphorst (Netherlands, 1940-1950) depicts five playful kittens at a table and comes with an ornate hand-made frame.
Description from the seller
A beautiful and richly upholstered oil painting on canvas depicting five young kittens on a table. The kittens are playing with a blue spool of thread and a ball of pink wool. The tabletop is covered with a light brown tablecloth with a pattern. On the tablecloth lies a cushion, a round box with red ribbons, and a yellow-green basket resting on its side. The background features wallpaper and a curtain. Likely dated around 1950. The dimensions of the painting are 40.5 x 60.5 cm, and the outer size of the decorative frame is 59.5 x 79.5 cm.

The painting is in good to excellent condition and is clean of surface dirt. At the bottom, the painting shows a slight impression from the wooden stretcher frame. (See the penultimate photo.) The canvas was likely not properly stretched for some time and made contact with the wooden stretcher frame at the bottom. It is now properly tensioned again. The beautiful ornamental frame is handcrafted and in good condition with signs of age.
The Dutch artist Cornelis Raaphorst was born on October 2, 1875, in Nieuwkoop and died on January 24, 1954, in Wassenaar. He is the younger brother of artist Willem Raaphorst (1870-1963). Through his brother, Cornelis came into contact with painters Paul Citroen (1896-1983) and Jan Bogaerts (1878-1962), from whom he received advice. commissioned by Kunsthandel Scheen in The Hague, Cornelis began creating paintings with cats. He was strongly inspired by painter Henriëtte Ronner Knip (1821-1909). Cornelis mainly painted still lifes and animal scenes.
The painting is well packaged (including frame protection with foam U-profiles) and sent via registered mail. Although we pack the painting carefully, we cannot be held liable for damages to the frame. Therefore, it is preferable that the painting is picked up at our gallery in Lisse.
