Lingam protégé par le cobra Naga

Le lingam, symbole aniconique du dieu Shiva, est ici représenté sur un piédestal quadrangulaire à degrés, surmonté d’un cobra dressé à large capuchon, le Naga, figure tutélaire et protectrice.
Ce type de représentation, dite “Naga-linga”, illustre la fusion de deux forces divines, la puissance créatrice de Shiva et l’énergie tellurique du serpent primordial, associé à l’eau et à la fertilité.

La pièce est réalisée en bronze moulé à la cire perdue, avec un décor sobre et un léger travail d’incision le long du capuchon du serpent. La base creuse, visible au revers, suggère un usage rituel domestique ou de petit sanctuaire. Le serpent, démontable, indique qu’il pouvait être ôté pour les ablutions (abhisheka), consistant à verser de l’eau ou du lait sur le lingam durant le culte.

Les proportions équilibrées, la pureté du dessin et la patine profonde témoignent d’une production tardive médiévale ou précoloniale, probablement issue d’un atelier traditionnel du Deccan ou du Tamil Nadu.
