Perleberg of Woodstock, New York in 1928, printed by Birnbaum-Jack Co. in Philadelphia; original stiff portfolio, 44x36cm, 6 pp. of letterpress and 24 plates with 128 compositions (complete). Condition G- with staining to text pages only, chipping to edges of pages, with one large chip to the upper right corner of Plate #2 which extends into the image (see photos).
 
Andre Durenceau was a French-born U. S. citizen, trained at the l’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris before moving to America in 1923. This is the first American color art deco design portfolio and one of very few ever published, as the economic depression of 1929 ended the market for these expensive works. Plates from this portfolio are often sold individually, but complete examples are quite scarce.

These distinctive designs were originally intended for the needs of artists, fabric designers, craftsmen, decorators, commercial artists and art historians. They are now also collected as objects of art in and of themselves. Even dealers mistakenly list these as pochoir prints, but they were actually produced by an advanced silk-screen process, with results that strongly resemble, and are in no way inferior to, the French pochoir of the period. 

The 128 compositions are grouped into sets of three to eight, all utilizing no more than six colors. The patterns occasionally depict human figures, but mostly feature plant and animal life as well as geometric-patterned abstract shapes. Durenceau’s stated intention was to use color as a tool to convey emotion, capture attention in design, and provide narrative continuity.
