Toshio Saeki

The collection of works by Japanese painter and illustrator Toshio Saeki (1945-2019), titled “Chichū.” Born in Miyazaki Prefecture and raised in Osaka. After working for several years as an illustrator at a commercial design studio, he grew uncomfortable with the reality of being increasingly compromised by commercial design and became a freelance illustrator. Influenced by the work of Tommy Ungerer, whom he admired, his humorous pieces featuring motifs of eros and horror gained high acclaim. When he sent privately printed card works to associates and artists, he received praise from figures like Shuji Terayama and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa. This led to a feature in the popular magazine “Heibon Punch” at the time. In 1972, his work was featured on the cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album “Sometime in New York City,” propelling him rapidly up the ladder to stardom. This is a reprint of a 1995 collection, a volume showcasing the full Saeki World.
