A Chinese (Canton) laquered and gilt bamboo and paper 'One thousand faces' fan and it's box. China, mid 19th century, most probably late Daoguang (1820-50, 道光) period. Rare object of very good quality.

Double paper leaf embellished both sides with Chinese figures wearing hand painted silk robes and having painted porcelain faces. Various scenes of buildings, gardens and interiors. Both guards and sticks are shaped, made of laqured bamboo, painted in gold with figures and flowers. Guard length - 27,4 cm.

Fan comes with it's original black lacquered wooden box painted with gilt sitting figures on top and flowers on all sides. Interior with brocaded fabric on cardboard. Dimensions of the box: 31,8 x 6,3 x 5 cm.

Provenance: private collection, France.

Conditions report: minor wear to the paper leaf, few faces and robes missing. One laquered bamboo stick missing. Box with natural patina, in need of cleaning. Damages to the cardboard interior. Check pictures for details.
