MASQUE MFONDO DE CHASSE - LWALWA - RDC ZAIRE - MASQUES AFRICAINS
Chez les Lwalwa, on a répertorié deux catégories majeures de masques :

féminins, les Mushika ou Kashika se distinguant des autres par une coiffure très élaborée,
et les masques masculins, dont le Mfondo (ou Mvondo) fait partie, et qui est très similaire au Nkaki.
Les masques Lwalwa sont toujours d'une grande vigueur plastique et d'une remarquable abstraction.

Ils avaient un rôle important dans la danse Bangongo du rituel de la chasse.

Et lorsque les chasseurs revenaient bredouilles, on apaisait les esprits d'ancêtres en organisant une danse.

Ces masques étaient également utilisés dans les rituels de la société secrète Ngongo, qui avait en charge l'initiation et la circoncision des jeunes garçons du village.

Les masques se produisaient lors des danses régies par une chorégraphie complexe et devaient apaiser les mânes des ancêtres et les contraindre à intervenir.

Ils jouent encore un rôle important dans les cérémonies profanes dans lesquels ils se produisent, contre rétribution.
