Description from the seller
Memoirs of Monsieur the Count of Saint Germain
Amsterdam, 1779. 320 pages. Published by Marc-Michel Rey. Paperback edition in its original state. Binding worn, spine damaged as shown in the photos. Complete work, paper in good condition.
Original edition of the Memoirs attributed to Claude-Louis de Saint-Germain, former Minister of War of Louis XVI. The work presents his ideas on military reform, the administration of the armies, discipline, the organization of regiments, and the conduct of war, in a context of a deep crisis of the French military institution at the end of the Ancien Régime.
Although published as “writings by himself,” these memoirs were written by the Abbot of La Montagne and published by the Abbot Dubois, one year after Saint-Germain’s death. Their authenticity was debated from the outset, with some contemporaries doubting the text’s direct authorship.
Rare original edition of these historical memoirs of the Ancien Régime.
