Original edition of the French translation of Père Timothée de Livoy. In this work, one of the first comparative reflections, the author Carlo Denina (1731-1813) provides a broad overview of ancient and European literatures. Voltaire, who is treated very poorly in it, did not enjoy the work much.

Preserved in a beautiful armorial binding (not identified, see photos) stamped on the centers of both covers, executed in full marbled calf of the period, with a smooth spine decorated with gold fillets, fleurons, small tools, a title piece in garnet leather, and gilt lettering. Red edges.

In good condition, solid and clean volume, rubbed edges, upper cover trimmed. Slightly incised edges of the covers. Bright gilding. Interior well preserved, a few yellowed pages, rare scattered foxing.
A fine example.

Carlo Giovanni Maria Denina, born on February 18, 1731, in Revello, and died on December 5, 1813, in Paris, was an Italian writer, scholar, and historian. Among the works he undertook was the Literary History of Piedmont. His Discourse on the vicissitudes of literature, first published in 1760, earned him a reprimand from Voltaire, who, dissatisfied with the way he had been treated, directed a bitter remark at him in the last chapter of the Man with the Forty Crowns (1767).
