Zeldzaam en intrigerend medisch apparaat uit de Victoriaanse tijd, bekend als The Improved Magneto-Electric Machine. Deze houten kist werd gebruikt om een vroege vorm van elektrotherapie toe te passen — destijds geprezen als wondermiddel tegen uiteenlopende kwalen zoals zenuwpijn, reuma en tandpijn.

In de kist bevond zich oorspronkelijk een handaangedreven magneto-generator die een lichte elektrische stroom opwekte. Met twee elektroden kon de patiënt zelf de intensiteit regelen, zoals te lezen op het originele, nog aanwezige Engelstalige etiket in het deksel.

Het geheel is uitgevoerd in prachtig gepatineerd mahoniehout met messing beslag en zwaluwstaartverbindingen. Hoewel de mechaniek ontbreekt, straalt de kist nog altijd de sfeer uit van 19e-eeuwse medische innovatie en vakmanschap.

Een bijzonder verzamelobject voor liefhebbers van antieke wetenschap, curiosa of medische geschiedenis.
