Gérard Gouvrant was born in Paris in 1946. Even as a young child, he was reproducing the drawings from France-Soir. It was only during adolescence that he began to take a real interest in color. At that time, he particularly admired German expressionist painters.

When he approaches his blank canvas, Gérard Gouvrant seems to completely detach himself from the world around him. Even before applying a single stroke of color, he is already mentally contemplating the finished work. In reality, it is already completed in his mind, surpassing all surrounding reality.

The background emerges under his knife in lively, precise strokes, followed by some flat areas marking the different planes. Finally, a true symphony bursts from the brush, with such extreme finesse that it seems impossible for it to have left traces on the canvas. We speak of a symphony because his wrist guides the 'dragging' brush to the rhythm of a magical inner music that draws the details exactly where he had planned them, already clearly seen in his mind. Never remorse, no hesitation. Everything harmonizes perfectly.

However, without this characteristic nerve framework that seems barely to sketch the subject, like a quickly or even regretfully drawn sketch on colored masses, one might doubt that all the works are by the same artist's hand. Gérard Gouvrant indeed has no particular preference for a subject; he masters all genres with ease: landscapes, portraits, seascapes, flowers, clowns, birds... Everything that passes before his eyes seems immediately destined to be immortalized on canvas.

All atmospheres are effortlessly conveyed: the joyful lightness of a carnival, the humor of a grotesque confrontation between a king and his fool, the nostalgia of a snowy landscape... Gérard Gouvrant's works always tell a unique story: his pétanque players become philosophers, Don Quixote shares a sausage with Sancho Panza during a break, polytechnic students suddenly start dancing, while clowns try their hand at politics.

Gérard Gouvrant paints men as he sees them, and as they really are: neither entirely black, nor entirely white, but always a little of both.

A renowned expressionist painter, Gérard Gouvrant has participated in numerous exhibitions in France (Lille, Deauville, Honfleur, Le Touquet, Paris, Saint-Étienne, etc.), as well as abroad: at the Transoceana in Chicago, the Hemisphere Galleries in Hallandale, the Studio Gallery in Washington, D.C. (USA), and also in Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Switzerland. He has also created murals for the University Institute of Technology (IUT) in Roubaix and for the Palais des Congrès in Paris.
