Description from the seller
Marantz SD-1020 | Cassette Deck | Fully Serviced & Upgraded | Double Speed
A Marantz rarely found in this condition. This SD-1020 has been fully refurbished, not only with the standard service performed (belts, drive, VU check, alignment), but also with the complete mechanism overhauled, signal paths checked, and the rare double-speed functionality properly calibrated.
Originally released in the early 1980s, this deck was not an entry-level model even then – and now, in revitalized condition, it performs technically at the level of many more expensive models from that era.
This model was sold in small quantities as an alternative to the more expensive SD-4000 series, but it indeed has 3 motors, double speed transport, and stable tape handling thanks to separate motor feed and capstan control.
Technical specifications (factory-set and measured values after revision)
• Type: 2-head stereo cassette deck (mechanical soft-touch)
Year of introduction: circa 1980–1981.
• Heads: 2 (playback / record, erase)
• Drive: 2 capstan motors + 1 take-up (3 motors in total)
• Playback speed: 4.75 cm/s (normal) & 9.5 cm/s (double speed)
Frequent response
- at normal speed: 30 Hz – 17,000 Hz
- at double speed: 30 Hz – 20,000 Hz (after calibration)
• Signal-to-noise ratio: 60 dB (with Dolby B)
Dolby NR: B-type with adjustable bias
• Tape types: suitable for normal (Fe), CrO₂, and FeCr.
VU meters: analog display that is peak-sensitive.
• Outputs: stereo line-out RCA
• Inputs: stereo line-in RCA + microphone L/R (6.3 mm)
Weight: approximately 6.4 kg
Dimensions: 416 x 132 x 300 mm
Performed revision (by Audiovo, July 2025):
Complete replacement of all wires + capstan belt.
New pinch rollers (OEM-spec)
Complete disassembly of the loop mechanism, cleaning, and re-moistening of the pressure rollers.
Bias and tracking recalibrated to 0 dB test tape.
Full recalibration of double-speed drive (corrected asynchronous motor operation).
Contact cleaning on all switches and potentiometers (no noise)
Internally cleaned and shielded against magnetic interference.
Rec/play circuit passage controlled at both speeds.
Condition (Visual & Functional)
Front panel: mint, no scratches or discoloration.
• Buttons & sliders: original, light matte finish that does not peel.
Display light: original amber-colored – 100% working
Tape compartment: smooth sliding, cover opens gently.
Transparent and clear cassette door – no cracks.
Connections: no corrosion, RCA tight and clean.
