Description from the seller
Main features of the work
• Raffaele de Grada (1885–1957) • 'Seaside Pension' • Oil on canvas • 60×50 cm, 83×73×5 cm • In a contemporary frame • Signed at the bottom right • Signed and titled on the back of the canvas • Dated approximately between 1928 and 1935 • Provenance: private collection
An opera belonging to the figurative movement of the Italian Twentieth Century.
The work depicts a seaside pension immersed in summer tranquility, bathed in a golden light that caresses the facade and surrounding vegetation. Due to its architectural and environmental features, the subject can most likely be linked to the Tuscan coast, between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, places loved by the artist during his summer stays.
Raffaele de Grada's painting activity is fully embedded in 20th-century Italian art, characterized by a style of tonal figuration based on delicate balances of light and color. The drawing allows space for an harmony of chromatic planes, and the scene, immersed in a diffuse and poetic luminosity, expresses the measure and calmness typical of his phase of full adherence to the figurative language of 20th-century Italian art.
The work is signed at the bottom right and bears on the back, on the frame, the signature and the title 'Pensione al mare'. It features a contemporaneous carved and gilded wooden frame, with an internal bead profile and an original patina in good condition. It is an original painting of high pictorial quality and very well preserved.
Raffaele de Grada (Milan, 1885 – 1957) was one of the leading figures of Italian Twentieth Century art, active between Tuscany and Lombardy. He participated in numerous significant exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (from 1922), the Italian Twentieth Century exhibitions (Milan 1926 and 1929), the Rome Quadriennale (1959, posthumous), and the major retrospective at the Rotonda di via Besana (Milan, 1976). His works are part of important public and private collections and continue to be highly valued in the collector's market.
The buyer will receive the artwork in carefully packed and sturdy packaging. Very fast shipping. Free pickup available in Monza/Milan.
