When in 1926 the publisher Gustau Gili proposed to him to illustrate a classic of Spanish literature, Picasso counterattacked by proposing to print La Tauromaquia o Arte de torear, by José Delgado, known as Pepe Illo. A treatise on bullfighting written in 1796 by the bullfighter that Goya immortalized in the last engraving of his series La Tauromaquia.

The result was 26 sugar aquatints, a technique not very common but which gives movement to the ink and a special texture to the piece, and a bibliophile edition of La Tauromaquia de Pepe Illo of 263 copies. The artist from Malaga drew all the plates in a only day
