An original airbrush page from Toon van Driel for F. C. Knudde, titled Dit is "Dirk", presented in good condition and of interest to collectors of Dutch comic art.
Description from the seller
Toon van Driel (Amsterdam, February 16, 1945) is a Dutch cartoonist.
After working for a while at an advertising agency and as a stewardess at KLM, Van Driel created F.C. Knudde. This comic strip, which revolves around the bizarre adventures of a football club, appeared three times a week, and later daily, on the sports page of the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper from 1973 onward. The adventures of defender Jaap and goalkeeper Dirk quickly became incredibly popular, prompting numerous comic albums. The strip also appeared on NU.nl for many years.
Five years after F.C. Knudde, Van Driel made De Stamgasten (The Regulars), this time featuring animals. Pigs, penguins, camels, and giraffes find themselves in the most absurd situations, often displaying human traits.
Other comics by Van Driel include The Stuntels, André van Duin (about André van Duin), Hullie, The Weltevree family, The latecomers and Gorp.
In 1988, Van Driel won the Stripschapprijs for his entire body of work.
Legal battle over publishing F.C. Knudde
In 1986, Van Driel became embroiled in a legal battle with Fimla B.V., part of De Vrijbuiter Publishing. To avoid administrative matters, he had sold the rights to F.C. Knudde to this company in order to secure a steady income. In October 1979, Van Driel joined Fimla. The employment contract was terminated on November 1, 1985. The artist planned to resume publishing his comics himself, but Fimla wanted to retain Knudde. Attorney J.S. Timmenga argued that his client could no longer function due to the ongoing difficulties. Fimla announced through G. Mannaerts that the company was paying approximately ten thousand guilders per month. It wasn't until October 1987 that the Haarlem court ruled in Van Driel's favor.
This lot contains an original page by F.C. Knudde. The page is beautifully drawn in Toon van Driel's signature style. Wonderful humor.
