Description from the seller
ARAGO, François. OEuvres complètes de François Arago.
17 octavo volumes, with 24 plates. Bound in vermillion morocco.
First edition of the complete works of François Arago in 17 volumes. A brilliant scientist and great republican, Arago began preparing his papers in June 1848 for the publication of his complete works, which, however, was not completed during his lifetime.
A handsome and complete first edition set of the collected works of François Arago (1786–1853), the eminent French astronomer, physicist, mathematician, and statesman. Published posthumously under the supervision of the Académie des Sciences, these volumes bring together Arago’s vast and influential output, encompassing his pioneering research in optics, magnetism, astronomy, meteorology, and physics, as well as his celebrated biographical notices of leading scientific figures. The Oeuvres complètes remain a fundamental source for the history of nineteenth-century science and for understanding the intellectual milieu of post-Revolutionary France.
The seventeen octavo volumes are uniformly bound and include detailed memoirs, correspondence, lectures, and reports originally presented at the Académie or in Arago’s capacity as director of the Paris Observatory. Many of his most significant papers—on the undulatory theory of light, the measurement of meridians, and the nature of magnetism—are here printed in definitive form. Later volumes contain Arago’s engaging popular lectures and his political writings from the turbulent years of the July Monarchy and the Second Republic, reflecting his rare combination of scientific authority and civic conscience.
The volumes in our series are divided as follows: three volumes of biographical notes (numbered 1-3), five of scientific notes (volumes 4-8), two of scientific memoirs (volumes 10-11), four volumes of his writings on Popular Astronomy (volumes 14-17), two of his scientific travel accounts (volume 9), one volume of miscellaneous works (volume 9), and one volume of tables (volume 13). Details:
