Description from the seller
Beautiful 20th-century version of 'Mother of God of Kazan,' with very beautiful five-color enamel inlay work. Excellent condition. (see photos)
Characteristic of the Mother of God of Kazan is that Maria is depicted not from the waist down, but from the shoulders up; nothing is visible of her hands. Christ, on the other hand, is also notably shown in half-length; he gives the impression of standing on Maria's lap. He blesses by raising his hand, apparently unaware of the contemplative look in his mother's eyes.
This Kazan is undoubtedly the most beloved icon of the Russian people. It is associated with two holidays: July 8 and October 22.
As is customary with revered icons, a web of legends has been woven around the Mother of God of Kazan over the centuries. It is also said that shortly after its discovery, a blind woman regained her sight after touching the icon. A miracle that quickly made the Kazanskaja famous among the blind.
Kazan is a city in Russia, located on the Volga, about six hundred kilometers east of Moscow. In the year 1579, the Mother of God appeared in a dream to a young girl from the people and showed her a garden where a particularly holy icon would be found. Initially, the story of the girl was not believed, but after persistent urging, they finally searched and indeed found a wonderfully beautiful Mother of God icon at the indicated location.
