Plutarch, Opuscules de Plutarque, bound in full brown leather with French original language, published by SN as a reissue circa 1600, 673 pages, covering ethics, religion, politics, philosophy and history, with a reasonable condition given its age.
Description from the seller
Rare edition of this collection of short, varied treatises by the Greek philosopher, distinct from his famous Parallel Lives, but just as revealing of his moralist and erudite spirit.
These booklets address multiple themes — ethical, religious, political, scientific — such as virtue, superstition, tranquility of the soul, children's education, or issues of cosmology and literary criticism.
They stand out for their dialogued or discursive style, blending philosophical rigor with pedagogical concern, and testify to the influence of Platonism and Stoicism in Plutarch's thought, while asserting a distinct originality in the art of synthesis and popularization.
The collection illustrates the richness of his work beyond biographies, offering readers an overview of ancient thought applied to universal questions of human life, and providing modern bibliophiles with a valuable testimony on the editorial transmission of philosophical texts in the Western tradition.
Plutarch - Opuscules of Plutarch - SD (Circa 1600) - In the State -
Missing the first 51 pages - 677 plus 47 pages, and missing the last 5/10 pages of the table.
Good condition of the binding, book in its original full brown leather, showing signs of use, spine damaged with loss of material, upper headband missing, edges split, corners rounded, spine decorated with raised bands, gold lettering.
Average interior condition because the title page and the first 52 pages are missing, page 65 is torn and missing, and there are tear marks on pages 239/240, along with water stains and creases. Otherwise, it is in good condition aside from these missing parts. Beautiful initial letter.
