Eduardo Chillida was born in San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa) in 1924. In 1947, he created his first pieces. For two years (1948-1950), he lived in France, where he exhibited for the first time. Upon returning to the Basque Country, he settled in Hernani, where he created his first iron work, "Ilarik" (1951), a material he worked with for ten years. Around 1960, he returned to large granite sculptures. His first exhibition was held in Madrid in 1954; quickly, works and successes followed. He was one of 30 creators who used fragments of the Berlin Wall as a canvas. Since 1996, he was part of the advisory artistic committee of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. He was one of the leading figures of the contemporary Spanish scene alongside Tàpies, Miró, Oteiza, Saura, Palazuelo, Millares, among others. He realized his dream of having an outdoor museum. He died in his hometown in 2002.
