Description from the seller

Homer's Iliad in Greek, ALDUS 1524

Homer's Iliad
At Venice · At the house of Aldi and Andrea Asulanus Soceri · April 1524.

Volume in-8, 277 ff pages, (1 f.) (A-Z8, AA-LL8, MM6). The first seven notebooks are missing (signed 1-78), which include the general title as well as Homer's life by Plutarch. The volume begins with the specific title of the Iliad, of which the text is complete.
Antique vellum binding, slightly creased and stained, mottled edges. Some old marginal annotations in ink in the margins, mainly at the beginning of the volume. The verso of the last leaf is stained and covered with old ink notes that are difficult to read, otherwise the interior is very clean.
The initial capitals at the beginning of each of the 24 books of the Iliad are illuminated with a quill using red ink, featuring motifs generally of vegetal patterns, but also griffins holding a crown or a fleur-de-lis, as well as a fantastical horned head.
Third and final Aldine edition of the Iliad after those of 1504 and 1517.
Several owner-related brands associated with Montauban: 'domus congregationis montalbanniensis' in the 18th century and 'purchased by Acanthe Prat from the bookseller Ballard in Montauban in 1820.'
