It is a fossil wood dating back 200 million years, with all parts from a log or branches silicified, meaning that organic components were gradually replaced by silicon in the form of jasper, chalcedony, and more rarely opal. Without the organic parts, all the living matter was replaced by stone: there are growth rings, cell separations, almost like worm cracks.
Its features are those of the mineral that would have pseudo-transformed the wood: silicon.
And that's what we call 'petrified wood' in everyday language.
