Russell sailed to Aleppo in 1740, having been appointed physician to the English factory there. He became the city's chief medical practitioner, through gaining the confidence of the local pasha. In 1754 he returned to England and two years later published his The Natural History of Aleppo, with a diary of the progress of the plague in 1742–1744.

Later half leather binding with marbled boards and gilt title to spine. Lightly faded spine. Recent endpapers, pencil note to front pastedown. Pencil name to top margin of title. Pages are complete with 17 folding plates, including the often missing sheep plate. Faint off-setting, light age toning and the odd little mark or spot here and there, otherwise pages and plates are generally clean as shown.
