This is a hand-carved wooden Noh mask depicting Ko-Omote, representing a young maiden of about 16 to 17 years old, traditionally used in Noh theatre. The surface is finished with gofun, a white pigment made from finely ground oyster shells, giving it a smooth, luminous texture. The blackened teeth (ohaguro) symbolise adulthood. The Ko-Omote mask is renowned for its subtle expression, which can appear joyful or sorrowful depending on the angle and movement of the performer, lending great emotional nuance to roles of youthful femininity.
The reverse is signed 'Seifu 1979 December'.
Signs of use and age include minor wear, areas of grime, minor paint chips, minor paint cracks, and blemishes. Please refer to the photos for a clear understanding of its condition.
