Moldavite (Czech: Vltavín) is an olive green or matte green glassy substance formed by a meteorite impact in southern Germany (Nördlinger Ries), which would make it a type of tectite. It was first introduced to the scientific community in 1786 as "Chrysolithe" from Týn nad Vltavou in a lecture by Professor Josef Mayer from the University of Prague, held at a meeting of the Bohemian Scientific Society (Mayer 1788). Zippe (1836) was the first to use the term "Moldavite," which derives from the town of Moldauthein (Czech: Týn nad Vltavou)—now in Bohemia (Czech Republic), where the first described specimens originated.

Campo Del Cielo meteorites are classified as coarse iron octahedrites of type IAB. This meteorite impact occurred 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. The first discovery was documented in 1576 by a Spanish captain named Miravel, although the actual impact was probably observed by indigenous Indians who originally called this region the "Field of the Sky."
