Description from the seller
Izaak Walton – The Compleat Angler
(The Folio Society, London, 2000)
Edition note:
Folio Society edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham, featuring his celebrated 1931 artwork reproduced with permission from his granddaughter.
Introduction:
First published in 1653, The Compleat Angler stands as one of the most enduring works of English literature—part pastoral meditation, part fishing manual, and part celebration of a simpler, contemplative way of life. Walton’s dialogue between Piscator, Venator, and Auceps gently explores nature, friendship, and the art of angling, enriched here by Rackham’s atmospheric illustrations.
Content:
This edition follows the text of the 1653 first edition with minor modernisation and includes all of Arthur Rackham’s original watercolours and line drawings. Walton’s reflections are accompanied by chapters on fish species, angling techniques, observations on rivers and countryside life, and the famous poetic interludes. A short Folio Society introduction provides historical context to Walton’s masterpiece and Rackham’s contribution.
