Description from the seller

Original edition and unique copy, adorned with 24 original unsigned compositions in the margins of the text, created with watercolor (see photos). One of 385 copies on Hollande van Gelder vellum, folded in in-8 size and numbered. This is number 395, uncut.

Paperback volume, both covers are detached, the spine is damaged with missing paper. Solid work, clean and fresh interior, impeccable. A pasted composition in pencil at the beginning of a chapter.

Henri-François-Joseph de Régnier, born in Honfleur (Calvados) on December 28, 1864, and died in Paris on May 23, 1936, was a French writer, novelist, and poet, close to symbolism. He was initially known for his poetry (his main influence was José Maria de Hérédia, whose daughter he married). He entered the French Academy in 1911.

... the short historical novel of Escapade set in 1738-1739 and again portraying the violence of carnal life; but against the various lustful and fascinated male characters, it features a very remarkable heroine. ...

Provenance: Ex-libris with initials "A. J." pasted on the front flyleaf.
