Description from the seller

Rare and magnificent photolithography titled 'La danse' by Marc Chagall.
A collectible piece whose original work can be admired at the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
Technique used by the artist: oil on canvas (232 cm x 173 cm)

Major artist of the 20th century, almost as famous as Picasso, whom he was friends with, Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a painter of surrealism, as Apollinaire noted. His work, imbued with a sense of the sacred, draws inspiration from Jewish tradition, which influenced his childhood. Exiled from Russia and settled in France in 1925, Chagall became one of the members of the École de Paris, which brought together foreign artists in the capital of arts. His colorful paintings are both dreamlike and poetic, despite a life marked by uprooting and the trauma of two wars.

About the artist :

He said, 'If all life inevitably leads to its end, we must, during ours, color it with our colors of love and hope.'

His/her life:

Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk in 1887, in Belarus, into a practicing Jewish family. His mother, who had eight children after him, played a vital role in his early years. He engaged with painting from a very young age.

In 1910, he set foot in Paris. At 23, he discovered the richness of the avant-gardes (Fauves, Cubists) and built his culture by making a habit of visiting the Louvre. Chagall connected with other Russian-speaking artists and writers, including Blaise Cendrars. He grew closer to the prince of poets, Apollinaire, who was also an art critic. By the dawn of the Great War, Chagall had already made his debut on the European art scene, from Paris to Berlin.
He returned to his homeland in 1914, a stay that would last longer than expected due to the Great War. In 1915, he married Bella, the great love of his life. A daughter was born from their union. The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 made him responsible for the fine arts in his hometown. He organized exhibitions and took care of the school.
In 1925, after a stint in Berlin, Chagall returned to Paris. He found his dealer in the person of Ambroise Vollard and at that time produced numerous illustration works, notably of the Bible. In 1937, Chagall obtained French nationality, which temporarily protected him from the persecution suffered by Jews in Russia. Despite being arrested by the Nazis in 1941, he managed to exile himself to the United States.
In 1944, Bella died. He meets a new woman who will give him a son. In 1952, a third mistress enters his life, Valentina, with whom he will remarry.

Chagall was also an artist of public commissions, with the support of André Malraux. At his request, he created the ceiling of the Opéra Garnier in the 1960s, which was highly criticized. In 1974, he received another prestigious commission: a series of stained glass windows for Reims Cathedral. The painter, who had settled on the Côte d'Azur in 1948, passed away in 1985 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
