Description from the seller
Published in 1756, Le Règne animal divisé en IX classes by Mathurin Jacques Brisson is a major work of eighteenth-century zoology. In this ambitious treatise, Brisson proposes a methodical classification of the animal world into nine broad classes, aiming to surpass existing systems through a more rigorous and descriptive approach. Precise, structured and enriched with detailed observations, the work marks an important milestone in the history of the natural sciences, at a time when understanding and organizing the diversity of living beings became a central concern.
Mathurin Jacques Brisson (1723–1806) is a French scholar passionate about the study of nature. A pupil and collaborator of Réaumur, he early distinguished himself with his work in zoology and ornithology. A methodical and independent mind, he seeks to ground the classification of living beings on precise and observable criteria. Professor of physics and member of the Academy of Sciences, Brisson actively contributed to the growth of the natural sciences in the Enlightenment, leaving a lasting imprint in the history of taxonomy.
