Description from the seller

GOCKEL (Eberhard). Gallicinium medico-practicum. Sive consiliorum, observationum medicinalium novarum centuriae duae, cum dimidia.

Two parts in one thick quarto ( 22 x 18 x 5 cm): [12] ff., 310 pp., [3] ff. (index), pp. 369-749 (including appendix), [47] pp., (index),

Ivory-stamped vellum on period wooden boards, covers decorated with blind-stamped framing motifs, metal clasps on leather, blue edges. Superlative binding, with spine restored with parchment. Some occassional foxing, ink stains on page 506. The clasps are original and fully functional. The binding is German, baroque.

With 10 plates of varying sizes, including the plague rat from India.

FIRST edition.

Treatise on pathology written by the German physician Eberhard Gockel (1636-1703), personal physician to the Prince of Württemberg. Only one reprint is known from 1722. The illustration consists of 10 copper-engraved plates in black, including a fold-out portrait of the author as a frontispiece by Georg Andreas Wolffgang, two fold-out plates on pages 308 and 512, and a small plate (approx. 6 x 9 cm) on pp. 146.

The work compiles two and a half centuries of medical observations and consilia, offering a structured overview of prevailing theories of diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy as practiced in early modern Europe. Written in scholarly Latin, it reflects the intellectual climate of the period when bedside practice was increasingly being documented in systematic form. The text covers a wide range of medical subjects—including fevers, pulmonary and digestive disorders, and epidemic disease—framed within a Galenic and early iatrochemical tradition.

The volume is notable not only for its content but also for its typographical and historical significance. Printed in a clear Roman type with occasional italic passages, it exemplifies the medical publishing style of the late Baroque period.
