Description from the seller

A remarkable folio antiphonary from the early 19th century, belonging to the tradition of Gregorian liturgical chant used in French ecclesiastical institutions after the Concordat of 1801. Likely published between 1810 and 1840, given the thickness and quality of the laid paper, it reflects the revival of plainchant initiated by the Benedictines of Solesmes under the leadership of Dom Prosper Guéranger (1805-1875). At that time, parishes, seminaries, and cathedral chapters sought to create antiphonaries adapted to the new liturgical prescriptions. The absence of a title page, the stamp of a religious institution on the first page, and the internal structure suggest regular choral use within a religious establishment.

The work begins with the section entitled "To the Doubles of the First Class," that is, the most solemn feasts of the liturgical calendar, preceding the offices dedicated to major saints and Marian feasts. It also contains the antiphons, responsories, and hymns intended for the major celebrations of the year, such as Christmas, Epiphany, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi, according to the Tridentine Roman calendar. The organization follows the hierarchy of feasts, a faithful reflection of the Roman Rite restored after the Revolution, in musical notation using square neumes: feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, double feasts, Sundays of Advent and Lent, Masses of the Blessed Sacrament, Masses for the Dead, etc.

Folio, 100 p., brown half-leather with smooth spine titled "chants divers" on the spine.

Good overall condition, binding rubbed with scuffs on the spine and scratches on the covers, other defects are minor.
