This large Delft blue cachepot by Petrus Regout & Co. Maastricht, dated 1860–1890, features an underglaze transfer landscape with blue floral sides and excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This large faience cache-pot, made by Petrus Regout & Co., Maastricht, dates from the second half of the 19th century and can be precisely dated between 1860 and 1890 thanks to the medallion stamp bearing the letter 'R' applied beneath the base. The piece features a blue style inspired by the Delft tradition, with a broad silhouette that provides a remarkable decorative presence.
The object adopts a rounded and generous shape, slightly flared towards the opening, resting on a subtle foot. Its decoration features a notable characteristic: only one of the faces is adorned with a large figurative tableau executed in enamel transfer printing, a technique involving transferring a carved motif onto the pottery before glazing, allowing for a precise, durable image that is perfectly integrated into the glazed surface. This scene depicts a Dutch landscape with a mill, rural houses, a sailing ship, and flying birds, all enclosed within a floral cartouche. The other faces, in contrast, offer a lighter, more dispersed decoration of stylized flowers painted in various shades of blue, creating a balanced ornamental rhythm around the vase.
The overall condition of the cache-pot is excellent. The glaze retains its shine, and no restoration or structural cracks are visible. The base shows a network of cracks typical of antique faïences, without associated fragility. The interior displays some signs of use consistent with the age of the piece, but overall, it presents a remarkable freshness for an object from this period.
Founded in 1834, the Petrus Regout & Co. factory—which later became Sphinx—is one of the first major ceramic industries in the Netherlands. During the 1860s to 1890s, it experienced significant expansion and refined the use of enamel printing, while developing a repertoire of motifs inspired by the Delft tradition. The medallion seal with an 'R' belongs to this production phase, where the factory combined modern industrial methods with Dutch decorative heritage, placing this cachepot in a pivotal period of its artistic and technical history.
The dimensions are:
Height: 21.5 centimeters
- Width: 29 centimeters,
Upper diameter: 9.37 inches.
- Base diameter: 16.8 centimeters.
Weight: 2500 grams.
The cache-pot will be carefully packed and quickly shipped in a secure manner to arrive before the holiday season. On-site pickup and group delivery are available. The photos are part of the description.
