Description from the seller
Enlarged print created by the artist, dated, signed on the back, and numbered 9/9. Made on Bergger baryta paper, 24x30 cm, toned with Selenium, with white borders, a black margin, and an image size of 19x28 cm.
Careful shipment but possibility of in-person delivery in Paris-Batignolles.
Born in 1964, of dual French-Portuguese culture, living in Paris, JM Simoes has been a photographer for over thirty years. A strong interest in people initially guided his approach, leading him in the 1990s towards reportage and journalism, as a regular contributor to the Journal du Dimanche, then to L’Express, Télérama, and the daily newspaper Le Monde.
For about twenty years, he has returned to an analog practice where working in the darkroom is an integral part of the final result. This work led him to discover old printing processes and to an almost exclusive use of vintage papers. His work, which is constantly enriched by the production of new series, combines a plasticist use of the old, transformed into collages, montages, and sculptures, allowing him to open up horizons that were previously unexplored.
He received the Documentary Photography Award, the Investigation Award, and the Special Jury Prize at the Festival du Scoop. Nominated for the Bayeux War Correspondent Award and the AFP-Bendrihem Award for Political Photography, his work is featured in several collections and public institutions.
Exhibited at the Chelsea Center for the Arts in New York, at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg, at the Centre d’art contemporain de Katowice in Poland, at Atelier 340-Muzeum in Brussels, and screened at numerous festivals in France and elsewhere.
He also authored the works 'Springstine sur Seine,' 'Request,' 'A Linha,' 'Verni$$age$,' 'Bienvenu chez les ch’tis,' 'La ville à trois vitesses' (with Jacques Donzelot), 'Chiens de la casse,' 'La banlieue vue d’ailleurs' (published by CNRS), 'Tout doit disparaître,' 'Si Mao m’était compté,' 'La puissance du négatif,' as well as the entire collection 'IN-OUT'.
