(*) Andrew Warhola (Pittsburgh; August 6, 1928 – New York; February 22, 1987), commonly known as Andy Warhol, was an American visual artist and filmmaker who played a pivotal role in the birth and development of Pop Art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde cinema, and literature—an fame supported by his savvy media handling and his role as a guru of modernity. Warhol served as a link between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians, and colorful urban characters. His influences include Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland, and Jack Smith.
Warhol used various media to create his works, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silkscreen printing, sculpture, film, and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, houses an extensive permanent art collection. It is coincidentally the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
He was a controversial figure during his lifetime – some critics described his works as pretentious or as mischief – and since his death in 1987, he has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books, and documentaries. Aside from fame and controversy, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century due to his revolutionary works.
