Venice: Pietro Bassaglia, 1747. [4], xliv, 313 pages, [2]. 25cm x 19cm. Softcover in the original wrappers with hand-lettered spine. Later edition of Maffei’s masterpiece which was first published in 1714. This edition is dedicated to Pietro Grimani, the Doge of Venice and has the engraved coat of arms on the cover page. Comes with beautifully engraved initials and tailpieces. In addition to Cavallucci's “Annotations” which cover a large part of the volume (pp. 126-203), it includes those of Domenico Lazzarini and the related ''Confutation'' by Maffei and ''Reply'' by Cavallucci; finally, the ”Letter” from Mr. Voltaire prefaced to his Merope.
Rubbing, bumping, soiling, water staining, and wear to the softcover. One of the four threads on the spine is missing. Pencil markings in the front pastedown endpaper and in the back pastedown endpaper. Bookworm holes at the bottom of pages 43-82. Browning and spotting throughout as usual. The text and illustrations are clear, the paper is silky smooth, and the binding is solid. Overall, a nice copy in good- condition.
