Copy preserved in its publisher’s cardboard box in perfect condition: red percaline, smooth spine decorated with gold motifs (shield, sword, title in a gold cartouche), first cover entirely adorned with a beautiful gold composition within a wide frame of black and gold border, gilded edges (Souze).

Condition: rare scratches on the caps, shanks, and corners, micro crack at the lower end of the first shank (2 cm), sturdy hinges. Interior clean and fresh. Very good condition.

French historian and pamphleteer Joseph-François Michaud (1767-1839) discovered the Crusades when he was asked in 1805 to write the preface for 'Mathilde or Memoirs,' drawn from Mme Cottin's history of the Crusades. He then produced his 'Historical Overview of the First Three Crusades,' a prelude to his monumental work, 'History of the Crusades,' published in seven volumes between 1812 and 1822, one edition of which is illustrated by Gustave Doré.
