Masamune Shirow is the pen name of Masanori Ota, a renowned Japanese manga artist best known worldwide for his iconic work Ghost in the Shell.
Arms is a standalone illustration with a steampunk theme, created in the 1990s as part of his art collections such as Intron Depot, where he blends science fiction, sensuality, and advanced technology.
Shirow rarely gives interviews and tends to keep a very low profile. His style is known for its intricate mechanical details and sophisticated weaponry, often inspired by both real and imagined technology. In Steam Angel, this obsession with the fusion of human and machine is clearly visible—though with a more fantastical and sensual touch than in better-known works like Ghost in the Shell.
