Madrid: Mateo de Espinosa y Arteaga, 1670. Frontispiece, title page, [29], 359, [8] pages. 20.5cm x 14cm. Full vellum binding with hand-lettered spine, and red edges. First edition of this emblem book that deals with political and moral principles, based on Seneca's writings. Comes with an engraved frontispiece, and 23 engraved emblem vignettes and 24 tailpieces.
Rubbing, bumping, soiling, cockling, and wear to the boards and spine. Remainder of a sticker at the bottom of the spine. Pencil markings on the front pastedown endpaper, and pen inscriptions on the title page. Browning, spotting, water staining, and cockling throughout. The last 8 pages are a bit more affected by some water damage, and the last two pages have some tears mended. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is a bit soft. Overall, and considering its age, a copy in good- condition.
