Pierre Boulle (1912–1994) is internationally renowned for two iconic works that became award-winning film classics: The Bridge over the River Kwai (1952) and Planet of the Apes (1963). Before becoming a writer, Boulle served as an engineer and secret agent with the Free French forces in Southeast Asia. Captured and subjected to two years of forced labour, he later transformed these wartime experiences into The Bridge over the River Kwai, which became a global bestseller. The film adaptation by David Lean received multiple Oscars.

Boulle also achieved lasting fame with his science-fiction masterpiece Planet of the Apes, which inspired an entire multimedia franchise, including several acclaimed films, magazines, and popular merchandise.
