Description from the seller

Medieval Chess — hand-painted porcelain set with chessboard/container (46×46×8.5 cm) — King 9 cm

This elegant 'Medieval Chess' set — hand-painted porcelain — is a themed series of Spanish production, sold with the illustrated manual 'Practical Manual of Chess' and with the container box that also serves as a chessboard.
It is offered for sale as shown in the photos.

General condition

Complete set and kept in good visible condition in the photographs; no cracks or breaks are visible on the pawns.
The porcelain is hand-painted.

The chessboard/container is functional, and the top part is usable as a playing surface.
The original manual is included.

Features and measurements

External dimensions of the chessboard/container: 46 × 46 cm, total height from the ground 8.5 cm.

Playing field (usable area on the lid): 36 × 36 cm.

Height of the king sitting on a throne: 9.0 cm (base diameter 3.5 cm).

Pedestrian height: 7.0 cm.

Material: porcelain / glazed ceramic, hand-painted.

Number of pieces: 32 tokens (full set), stored in the internal compartment of the box.

Features of the set

It is a historicizing version that does not include the queen in the modern classical setup; instead of the queen, there is a standard-bearer, and in place of the traditional modern bishop, we find figures of soldiers mounted on elephants. This choice draws from ancient/medieval chess typologies (where the figure of the 'elephant' appears as a historical evolution of the bishop).
This feature makes the set interesting for collectors of historical chess and for those seeking iconographic variants.
