A 1920s French linen jacquard table linen in red and white with arabesque borders, two C.L. initials and a gold border, reversible to reveal a deeper red hue.
Description from the seller
This is an early XXth Century damask linen, Jaquard weave table linen with red
Arabesque design borders.
The initials C.L. are singly hand embroidered in petit point cross stitch.
There are in fact two sets of initials which is somewhat unusual for that early period.
Being a Jacquard weave the table linen can be used also at the reverse side and will
show a much deeper "blood red" colour.
A gold border runs at the top adjacent to the small red border and also adjacent to the
wide Arabesque border, both horizontally and vertically which creates a pleasant finish.
The white damask background shows floral bouquets , plus scattering of single open flowers.
PLEASE NOTE;
Being a Jacquard weave and to create the red borders on the white linen results in a
slight "puckering" as at the early XXth Century the weaving looms had not mastered yet
a "smooth weave" with the warp and the weft.
So what we have done is to iron away the surplus white linen and put that under the red borders
and secured this with a slip stitch.
This applies just and only to the 2 small vertical lines at both ends.
You will not notice it when decking the table.
The napkins are NOT included, but shown in the same auction.
