France; Late XIXth C Century bed linen with scalloped edges and G.P. initials, made of linen, measuring 2.80 m by 2.00 m, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Bed linen with G.P. initials.
This bed linen dates back to the latter part of the 19th Century.
We can almost date it to this period as the bed linen has a
seam in the centre.
The weaving looms were maximum 1 meter wide.
So the fabric would be woven in great quantity.
After that the lengths would be determined .
The young girls having just left school and been taught
sewing, embroidery, lace making etc. would have to sew
meticulously sew the selvedges together.
It always surprises that after all these decennia the selvedges
have not separated, but of course most of these superior linens
never or almost never saw the daylight and were precious pieces .
They only saw the daylight on very special occasions and then disappeared again
in the trousseaux ( dowry ) armoires.
The initials G.P. or maybe even G.L.P ( see the second initial ) are sympathetically
embroidered in high relief and resting on a background of Richelieu open cut work.
the edgings are scalloped in a different manner.
Each scallop has a Richelieu open cut ork flower on them.
No doubt this would have been a marriage linen and used only for the
honey moon period.
PLEASE NOTE;
This bedlinen comes straight out of the armoire and will need refreshing prior to us.
The linen that we offer for sale is not new linen, unless specifically mentioned, it is second-hand and old linen.
As such it may have already been washed, used or even worn.
In spite of the great care we take during the preparation, small imperfections can and may escape us.
They do not in any way call into question the unique and rare character of these wonderful pieces.
I present you our Antique linen unwashed, as taken out of the armoire, unless otherwise described . It is all clean, but plan to give it a wash before use.
Please be aware of the above before you bid and buy.
Thank you for taking this into account.
