Asterix (in the original Astérix) is the most successful French comic series, created in 1959 by author René Goscinny (1926–1977) and illustrator Albert Uderzo (1927–2020).
Main characters are the title hero Asterix, his friend Obelix, and other inhabitants of a small village in Armorica in Gaul around 50 BC. With the help of a magic potion from their druid Miraculix, which grants superhuman strength, they resist the Roman conquerors. Their adventures take them across the entire ancient world and beyond. Thanks to a combination of subtle satirical humor and coarse slapstick, Asterix appeals to a broad readership of various age groups and social classes. The comic series is one of the few used in schools, especially in foreign language classes for French, Latin, and Ancient Greek.
After the death of René Goscinny, Albert Uderzo also took on the role of author from volume 25 (The Great Divide) to volume 34 (Asterix & Obelix Celebrate Birthday). Since volume 35 (Asterix and the Picts), the series has been illustrated by Didier Conrad and scripted by Jean-Yves Ferri, and from volume 40 (The White Iris) onwards, by Conrad and Fabcaro. The stories originally appeared in serialized form in the comic magazine Pilote and were published as albums by Dargaud.
Today, the albums are published in the French original by Hachette Livre and in German translation by Egmont Ehapa Media. The 41st album, titled Asterix in Lusitania, was released in October 2025. Except for episode volumes 32 (Asterix chats at school) and 34 (Asterix & Obelix celebrate a birthday), each one tells a self-contained story. Over the years, several short stories have also been published. Multiple adventures have been adapted into films.
