Four-volume set of Dieudonné Thiébault’s memoirs on Frederick the Great, revised by Dampmartin in 1813, complete with two portraits and bound in period leather.
Description from the seller
Third edition, reviewed by A.-H. Dampmartin, of these famous memoirs, in the intimacy of the King of Prussia. Complete with the 4 volumes and the two portraits, of Frederick II and the author.
Memoirs of Thiébault on his stay with the King of Prussia and his court. Having gained the king's trust, Thiébault was pensioned in Berlin, where he served as his reader and corrected many of his works.
According to the written warning by the author's son, this work constitutes the second part of the memoirs, the first of which, remaining in manuscript form, has disappeared. — "This work, despite the fine studies published since on the reign of Frederick II, his diplomacy, and his campaigns, has hardly lost its originality and remains his best claim to posterity, since it can be said that all the anecdotes reported and all the characters sketched by Thiébault are accurate." (Revue des Deux Mondes, 1893)
Preserved in an antique binding, half-blond leather with corner pieces, smooth spine decorated with a rich design in gold tools, two pieces indicating the title and volume number.
Condition: missing fragments on the upper edges, worn cuts and corners. Slightly insolated pages with fine foxing. Overall good condition.
