Rare Variorum edition given in Leiden by Antonius Thysius (1603-1665) of the 'Memorable Facts and Sayings' by the Roman historian Valerius Maximus (1st century AD).
Opens with a copper-engraved frontispiece title, signed R. Van Persyn, followed by a dedicatory epistle to Christine de Suède. Typographic ornaments engraved on wood, including banners, initials, and tailpieces.
The text is accompanied by numerous footnotes.
Period-bound, ivory vellum cover. Manuscript title in ink on the back.
Condition: binding in very good condition, slight traces of dirt on the vellum. Interior fresh, with a few fine, scattered foxmarks. A fine copy.
Bookstore label (A. Durand) on the front pastedown. Old handwritten ex-libris on the title page.
Contemporary with Tiberius, Valerius Maximus compiled a collection of stories to help speakers illustrate their arguments and lend the authority of figures from Roman history.
