Claude Lancelot - Nouvelle méthode pour apprendre facilement la langue grecque - 1658

Second edition of this classic treatise by the Jansenist Claude Lancelot, which, along with the Garden of Greek Roots, contributed to the reputation of Port-Royal's pedagogical method.

This so-called Port-Royal method allowed learning Greek from French rather than Latin. It was Lancelot who taught Greek to Racine.

Claude Lancelot was the first to use French for the writing of an educational treatise. It is certainly his best work, and he greatly contributed to reviving the study of Greek, which had been neglected at the time. It contains many new and instructive principles based on respect for the child.

Vintage binding, porphyry calf, spine with raised bands, title and compartments gilded with gold tools.

Condition: first jaw split (3 cm), missing fragment in the head crest, one corner pierced. Interior fresh, paper slightly yellowed, occasional foxing. Good condition.
