RAISSON (Horace) - Code of Personal Care, a comprehensive manual of elegance and hygiene, containing laws, rules, applications, and examples of the art of caring for oneself and dressing tastefully and methodically. Paris, J.-P. Roret, 1829. Small 12mo (8.5 x 14 cm), 275 pages. Third edition, partly original as it was revised and expanded. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece titled 'Departure for the ball.' A fine publication with careful typography, printed on well-white vellum paper. A small manual of civility and elegance, offering a true code of self-care and dressing, reflecting the concerns of fashionable dressing at the beginning of the 19th century. The work methodically addresses body care, beauty, clothing, and good manners. A representative work of a literary fashion marking the end of the Restoration, dealing in particular with the myriad forms of deception and ways to counter them. (See Boris Lyon-Caen in Romantisme 2014/2 (No. 164)). In the vein of manuals like the 'Code Gourmand,' 'Code Civil,' 'Code of Honest People,' or the 'Penal Code' attributed to Balzac.
