Hand-forged iron fittings for a 17th‑century dowry chest, likely from southern Germany or Switzerland, comprising seven decorative pieces with a fully functional iron lock bearing a fertility motif.
Description from the seller
Handcrafted fittings of a storage chest from the mid-17th century – with a functional lock (a fertility symbol).
For sale is an exceptionally rare and well-preserved set of hand-forged iron fittings, likely from a historical Austeuer or dowry chest, dating back to the mid-17th century. The pieces probably originate from southern Germany or Switzerland, where intricately decorated chest fittings of this kind were traditionally crafted.
The set includes seven finely crafted individual pieces, whose careful forging techniques and ornamental decorations suggest a wealthy background.
All elements have been reused multiple times over the centuries and were last used as decorative fittings on a historic built-in cabinet in a villa.
The associated iron lock is fully functional and displays a symbolic fertility motif, characteristic of dowry and storage chests.
Note: The key is not original but has been custom-made and opens the lock reliably.
The fittings were dated by an expert to the middle of the 17th century.
Another set of later but equally handcrafted reproductions from the mid-19th century is also available, but it will be offered in a separate auction.
Viewing the objects is possible by appointment in advance.
